PRH scrapping degree requirements for jobs

Penguin Random House have recently removed degree requirements from new jobs to attract a more "varied candidate pool."

The change came after HR Director Neil Morrison explained that a good degree doesn't necessarily correlate with an ideal candidate for a job.

“We want to attract the best people to help grow and shape the future of our company, regardless of their background - and that means that we need to think and act differently. Simply, if you’re talented and you have potential, we want to hear from you," Morrison said.

The move has caused quite a reaction across social media, many unexpected supporters being universities.

Claire Squires, a Professor in Publishing at the University of Stirling described the move as welcome.

"This might seem odd," she said, "coming from someone who runs a publishing degree programme, but a diversity of routes into publishing is really important to sustain and develop the future industry, and crucially to open out its employment base."

But then others have branded the move as adding another obstacle to an already heavily competitive and crowded career route.

PRH have said that graduates are still welcome to apply but that they want to create as diverse a selection of people as possible.

“We believe this is critical to our future: to publish the best books that appeal to readers everywhere, we need to have people from different backgrounds with different perspectives and a workforce that truly reflects today’s society.”
