National Libraries Day 2016: Truly Inspirational

Last Saturday, (6th February), was a very special day; a day for books and community spirit and more books, otherwise known as National Libraries Day.

With all of the rather depressing press coverage recently regarding library cuts and closures, this day felt like a necessity. National Libraries Day was all about celebrating what libraries have done for so many: to encourage reading and writing, to provide a source of information and enjoyment for all, and to be a hub for support and comfort in troubling times. The support for libraries over the last few months has been outstanding and this was only emphasised at the number of events that took place as well as the growing number of supporters in favour of libraries.

“This National Libraries Day was the biggest yet," Nick Poole, CEO of CILIP, said. "The outpouring of love for our national network of libraries on Saturday was truly inspirational. It’s an important moment to celebrate all the creative, transformation and unexpected things that happen when you step into a library. The vital importance of modern libraries to families and communities across the UK came through over and over again.”
